Our Broadband Vision

  • That consumers anywhere in Tasmania can obtain affordable access to broadband services through competition and measured regulation. This requires competitive backhaul to the mainland, within Tasmania and a choice of technologies/service providers for homes and businesses.

Goal: Backhaul to Mainland Australia

  • The Tasmanian Government, through its preferred network partner and Aurora Energy, should immediately resolve negotiations with the Basslink operator to enable use of the cable's fibre optic component.
  • The Australian Government, as part of its National Broadband Network plan should establish another Bass Strait fibre optic path as the now cancelled OPEL plan would have.
  • Until alternative backhaul capacity is available, the ACCC should issue a pricing determination on services between Tasmania and mainland Australia, which means setting the price at which services must be sold in line with suggested backhaul pricing detailed in their published ACCC telecommunications transmission cost model.

Goal: Intra-Tasmania Backhaul

  • The Tasmanian Government through its ownership of the TasGovNet system, should ensure that it is made available to Educational institutions and Internet Service Providers.

Goal: Last Mile Access

  • A range of technologies can and should be utilised to connect customers over the "last mile". These include ADSL2+, Wireless, FTTN and FTTH.
