Digital Television

Australia is in the process of switching Television transmissions from analogue to digital. Under current plans in analogue signals in Tasmania will be turned off on July 1st, 2013.  After that time, viewers will need a digital television or set top box connected to their televisions.

Digital Tasmania welcomes recent announcements which will ensure that more people can receive digital television through provision the following:

  • An upgrade current analog self-help (blackspot) transmitters to digital.
  • A subsidised satellite service and equipment for those who cannot get land-based transmissions.
  • Equipment and installation of digital TV receivers for pensioners/carers.


In order for maximise coverage and value for consumers, Digital Tasmania calls for:

  • A digital upgrade for all 14 Tasmanian self-help (blackspot) transmitters at least a year before the switch over in July 2013.
  • New digital transmitters be established where necessary to fill current blackspots. For example. Glengarry, Flinders Island and the Fingal Valley.
  • All local Tasmanian content be made available through the satellite service so Tasmanians can receive local information such as news, sport and emergency alerts.
